Via Christi Health's ministries in Wichita traces their roots to ministries established more than a century ago by the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother, and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wichita.
In 1889, a small group of Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother arrived in Wichita from Europe. They assumed responsibility for St. Francis Hospital and turned it toward prosperity. In 1925 the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wichita assumed a similar mission as they adopted the former Wichita Hospital.
The hospitals became part of Via Christi Health System in 1995 when the Sisters brought together their healing ministries. Via Christi Health is now affiliated with Ascension Health.
Today, Via Christi is Wichita's regional leader in medical care and research, with specialty care and treatment for cancer, heart disease, neurological conditions, trauma, burns, women's and children's health, behavioral health, and organ and tissue transplantation.
