Genevieve's Story
When Christine Brisco's teenage son called saying her grandmother was having trouble breathing, she was relieved to hear that an ambulance was en route.
She also was thankful to have a new hospital just three miles from the west Wichita home she and her family share with 88-year-old Genevieve Roehrman.
EMS took Roehrman to the Emergency Department at Via Christi Hospital on St. Teresa, where she was quickly evaluated, diagnosed, admitted to the hospital and transferred to a private patient room for ongoing care.
Brisco's father, who lives within four miles of the hospital, stayed with her the first night. Because all the hospital's 68 private patient rooms are equipped with day beds and linens, "it was very comfortable for him to stay there."
The staff providing Roehrman's care were excellent, Brisco said, responding immediately and compassionately to the call button on her remote, which can also be used to control the room's lighting, temperature and window shades.
"At Via Christi Hospital on St. Teresa, we were so comfortable with my grandmother's care that we were able to go home and get a good night's rest," Brisco said. "We've never felt like we could do that before."
As they left, she said, Roehrman's nurse handed her a card with her phone number on it and said, "Call me any time during the night if you have any questions."
"So I did - I called at 3 a.m. to check on how my grandmother was doing," Brisco said. "Her nurse said, 'She's doing fine, but what are you doing up at this time of the morning? Are you OK?'"
Brisco said she liked the on-demand, patient-select menu and the view of the neighboring farmland through the room's big picture window.
But it was the caring and supportive staff and volunteers - and the prayers - that impressed her the most during her grandmother's three-day hospital stay.
"We appreciated the spiritual touch of morning and evening prayers on the intercom and the volunteer who came by to let us know she was praying for us," she said. "That meant a lot."
