The Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at Via Christi Hospitals in Wichita offers an outstanding one-year post-residency fellowship.
The Via Christi Sports Medicine Clinic, located in the Frederic C. Chang Clinics Building on the North St. Francis Campus, specializes in the evaluation, treatment and prevention of sports injuries for athletes at all levels. It is staffed with by Family Medicine Sports Medicine physicians, all with a Certificate of Added Qualifications in sports medicine — the same doctors who are team physicians for the Wichita Wingnuts and the Wichita Thunder. Our physicians and athletic trainers also provide coverage for athletic teams at Wichita State University, Newman University and most area high schools.

Program Goals
Our fellowship goals are to train our fellows to be well prepared to handle a broad range of sports medicine care. We want our graduates to be able to care for patients of all ages and to be able to use musculoskeletal ultrasound for both the diagnosis and treatment of injuries. Fellows will be confident and caring for athletes of all levels of sport
Program Overview
The Via Christi Sports Medicine Fellowship Program provides sports medicine coverage for over 600 NCAA Division I and Division II athletes, 4 semi-pro teams as well as high school and various community athletes. The Fellows participate in preseason physicals, event coverage and weekly athletic training room visits. Sports Medicine clinic occurs 9 half days per week at one location. Our clinic focuses on athletic medicine for active patients.

Sport Coverage
Event coverage includes NCAA Div. I &II sporting events, coverage for 4 professional teams (indoor soccer, arena football, baseball and hockey), state high school tournaments, a month of acute sports medicine/orthopedic trauma at a ski clinic in Crested Butte, Colorado and in-season high school football coverage.
Teaching /Research
Fellows receive 3-4 hours of weekly didactics in orthopedics, anatomy, fractures, sports medicine, and family medicine topics. Monthly didactics include MRI conference, journal club, physical therapy lectures, and MSK Ultrasound. Teaching opportunities abound with 2 family medicine residents and 1 medical student at all times on the sports medicine rotation. Lecture opportunities are plentiful with family medicine residents, medical students, athletic training students and PA students. Fellows present at the annual AMSSM and ACSM meetings every year. Fellows attend the Fellow Research Conference every year as well.
Stipend and Benefits

How to Apply
Eligibility and application process: Applicants must be a graduate of an accredited Residency Program (Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, PM&R, or Pediatrics), be board-certified or board-eligible, and be able to obtain a Kansas medical license. Candidates usually apply in the third year of residency. The application process will be completed through ERAS. The application deadline is November 15th. Interviews, by invitation only, take place from Oct. 1 to Dec. 15. The Sports Medicine Fellowship participates in the NRMP. The Match occurs in January.
