USA Today article talked about how counseling experts are already seeing a 66 percent growth in calls this year from adult children seeking advice on complex medical, legal and financial issues involving aging parents, according to a report. There is also typically an increase during November and December, when families gather after long absences.

When children come home for the holidays, it’s often the first time they start to see signs that mom and dad might need some assistance. At this time of year concerned children of aging parents often call seeking guidance in getting help for their parents.

It might not be that they need to be moved to assisted living, but maybe they could use some help around the house or a helpful neighbor to look in on them from time to time. Another option might be Smart Home Technology, which enables older adults to remain independent in their homes and provides security and peace of mind.

Here are some warning signs to look for:

  • Stacks of unopened mail
  • Decline in personal grooming habits
  • Loss of interest in hobbies and activities
  • Missed appointments
  • Changes in weight or diet
  • Visible signs that housekeeping is not being kept up with
  • House not at appropriate temperature
  • Indications that medication is not being taken; prescriptions not refilled
  • Pets not being cared for
  • Confusion about how to prepare a meal
  • Parent is sleeping more than normal
