"I believe CyberKnife® has cured me of this cancer."
For many, cancer leaves few options. For prostate cancer survivor Bob Garrett, early detection opened the door to a treatment that not only improved his long-term prospects, but did it without limiting his everyday life.
Garrett had his annual physical in November of 2006. When certain tests came back high, he had a biopsy, which revealed new beginning cancer cells. "Prostate cancer is slow moving," Garrett said, "so I had time to figure out how to deal with it."
Garrett met with his urologist to discuss the treatment methods available. Ultimately, Garrett decided on CyberKnife®, a treatment option that offers non-invasive, precision, radiation beam therapy through advanced 3-D imaging technology.
CyberKnife allows doctors to take a CAT scan and an MRI, marry them in the computer to produce a three-dimensional model, then create a treatment plan based on that.
For an active guy like Garrett - who plays racquetball three times a week - CyberKnife was the perfect choice. Having his cancer contained within the organ made targeting it easier. CyberKnife minimizes the amount of non-cancerous tissue that is irradiated, and each of his five treatments only took an hour out of his day.
"They take the time to make sure you are comfortable, and then you just lie on the table and let CyberKnife do its work. I didn't feel anything, I didn't have to miss any time off of work, and I had minimal side effects."
In addition to the excellence of his doctors, Garrett credits Via Christi supporters whose contributions helped bring CyberKnife to Wichita.
"CyberKnife is a million dollar piece of equipment. I was fortunate to have access to one here, and am glad others will get to use it, too. Every man over 50 should have a yearly prostate cancer screening. It paid off for me because they caught my cancer early."
While Garrett acknowledges there's never a guarantee when it comes to becoming cancer-free, he has faith in CyberKnife's effectiveness.
"Cancer is the big bugaboo. If you leave it unattended, it will spread to other parts of your body. I believe CyberKnife has cured me of this cancer."
