The Orthopaedic Research Institute has three laboratories: Biomechanical Laboratory, Biocompatibility Laboratory and Biochemical & Molecular Analysis Laboratory. The Biomechanical Laboratory is located at Via Christi Hospital on North St. Francis and is equipped with:

  • Nine material testing systems
    • One MTS Bionix Biaxial Servohydraulic Testing System (Model 810) with 2.5 kN and 25 kN axial capacity, 25 Nm and 222 Nm torsional capacity, six channels data acquisition, hydraulic and mechanical grips, variety of loading fixtures, and bio-environmental test chamber
    • Six MTS Mini-Bionix Servohydraulic Axial Fatigue Load Frames (Model 858), with 5 kN axial capacity, and bio-environmental test chambers
    • One Instron Materials Testing System (Model 4204) with 5 kN and 50 kN axial capacity, mechanical grips, variety of loading fixtures
    • One Bose ElectroForce Biomaterial Testing System (Model 3200) with 225 N axial capacity, 5.6 Nm torsional with 10 revolutions capacityVariety of computing systems
    • Stryker Surgical Navigation System for Hip and Knee Replacement which guides accurate cuts within a fraction of a degree and provides real time visualization of varus/valgus, internal/external rotation, flexion/extension. It evaluates functional performance of the components, ensures accurate implant positioning, and records patient data and resultsCadaver preparation/mock surgery capabilities
  • Materials specimen preparation facilities
  • Mechanical device/prototype testing capabilities
  • Small machine shop equipped with laboratory equipment
  • Leading commercial FEM and CAD software
  • 2,100 sq. ft. of laboratory floor space and 1,200 sq. ft. of office floor space
  • Access to a complete and fully staffed medical library

ORI also maintains the Biocompatibility Laboratory and the Biochemical & Molecular Analysis Laboratory at Wichita State University, with access to Animal Research Facilities, molecular and immunological testing, tissue culture and microscopy. These laboratories specialize in:

  • General biocompatibility testing utilizing the in vivo murine air pouch model
  • Orthopaedic materials biocompatibility testing using rodent bone implantation techniques
  • Targeting gene activation profiles using real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry
  • Cellular and serological responses to biomaterials
  • Patient material sensitivity testing for sensitivity to common orthopaedic biomaterials
  • Development of anti-arthritic drugs and biological response modifiers using murine models of rheumatoid arthritis and lupus
  • Development of anti-cancer therapeutics using models of sarcoma and skin cancer
