Childbirth Education
We recommend that you take the following classes during or after your seventh month. These classes fill up quickly, so please contact us early to get on the schedule.
Childbirth Preparation: Six-week course
We'll help you and your labor coach prepare for the birth of your baby. You'll practice a variety of relaxation and breathing techniques, as well as comfort measures for labor. You'll have a chance to discuss medication options, medical procedures and possible difficulties you might encounter during labor, and receive information regarding cesarean birth. A tour of the NewLife Center also will be provided.
7-9 p.m., Wednesday or Thursday
Childbirth Preparation: Four-week course
A shorter version of the six-week course including ample time to discuss medication options, medical procedures and possible birth difficulties. Also included are relaxation skills and breathing techniques.
7-9 p.m., Tuesday
Condensed Childbirth Preparation: One-day course
A brief overview of what to expect during labor and birth, including medication options, medical procedures, cesarean birth, relaxation and breathing techniques.

Baby Care
We recommend that you attend the following classes during your sixth or seventh month of pregnancy.
Baby Care Seminar
During this course, you and your partner will learn to care for your new baby. Not only will you learn how to bathe, dress and calm him or her, we'll teach you how to recognize signs that your baby may be ill, what to do if your baby is sick and when to seek medical advice and/or treatment. You'll also learn how to design the safest possible environment for your baby, what to do should an emergency arise and how to perform CPR on your infant. And if you're baffled by all the car seats to choose from, don't worry. We'll explore that too!

Boot Camp for New Dads
Expectant fathers can now get some hands-on training through a unique program that pairs "rookie" dads with "veteran" dads and their newborns for a single three-hour boot camp. Learn how to diffuse your stress, help Mom, form a bonded family, survive a crying baby and much more. Sponsored by Kohl's Department Stores, the "camp" is held monthly in various locations around the community. Participants get a T-shirt, training manual and certificate of completion. Nursing Your Baby
You'll learn how breastfeeding will benefit you and your baby, as well as how to promote a successful breastfeeding experience. Also covered during this one-session class: preparing to go back to work and information about the various kinds of breast pumps.
1-3 p.m., Saturday or 7-9 p.m., Tuesday
Happiest Baby on the BlockTM
This monthly, two-hour program teaches parents the five steps to calming a crying baby. Participants receive an instructional DVD, a calming sounds CD and a swaddling blanket. For dates and times, call Via Christi Health Connection at 316-689-5700.

Baby and Me (for brothers and sisters)
This two-hour, one-session class is designed to help brothers and sisters-to-be ages 2 and older prepare for your hospital stay and the arrival of their new family member. In addition to the learning activities, your child will have a chance to ask any questions he or she might have and receive a brief tour of the NewLife Center.
Shared Beginnings
This class is designed for brothers and sisters ages 3 and older who plan to be present at your baby's birth.

The Via Christi NewLife Center holds free monthly car seat checks. This is a great opportunity for parents to learn about the correct use of child safety seats before their child is born.
