Stephen Nesbit received his medical degree from the University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kansas City, MO, in 1981. He then completed a one-year internship at Riverside Hospital, which included rotations at what now is Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis. He later earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Houston.
After practicing family medicine in both private practice and as an employed physician, in rural and urban settings, Dr. Nesbit launched his physician executive career as a medical director and chief medical officer for various health plans in Texas. Following seven years on the payer side of health care, he returned to the hospital setting and has spent six years as CMO in regional referral centers.
He served as senior vice president and chief medical officer for St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin, MO, which at the time was owned by Catholic Health Initiatives. Prior to coming to Via Christi he was chief medical officer at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.
Dr. Nesbit was named chief medical officer for Via Christi Hospitals in Wichita in September 2011.
