Whether it's a patient she'll see for only 30 minutes — as they prepare for or recover from surgery — or a co-worker, Elizabeth “Betty” Hedges, RN, tries to treat all those around her at Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis as if they are members of her family.
"Betty greets each patient with a smile, kind word or hug, most of the time all three,” said Ann Price, RN.
"She's just as nice and generous with her hugs and kind words to all our staff,” said Sarah Truman, RN.
Over the course of her 35-year career, Hedges has worked in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Trauma and now in Pre-Op/Recovery.
For many patients, her colleagues say, Hedges' simple touch or soothing words relieve anxiety, provide reassurance and leave a lasting impression.
"She is one of the most compassionate nurses I have ever met,” said Price, a sentiment repeated in the half-dozen letters nominating Hedges. “She makes me want to be a better nurse.”
