Starting BMI: 40.4
Current BMI: 22.8
Total pounds lost: 96
I had gastric bypass surgery 13 months ago and since that time have lost nearly 80 pounds. My total weight loss is 96 pounds from my all-time high and that is a literal load off my 5-foot-2-inch frame!
My journey toward surgery started in the summer of 2008 when I knew I didn't feel like I should. I was tired, cranky and not able to keep up with my 6-year-old and 4-year-old twins. I went to my doctor for a battery of tests and learned that I was the picture of health. But my doctor said that he could look at me and tell I was not healthy. With a family history of heart disease and diabetes, it was just a matter of time before those things started showing up in my health screenings. I needed to do something now.
I had seen ads for gastric bypass surgery and didn't figure I was a candidate. I have tried about every reasonable (and some not so reasonable) weight loss plan out there and had great success, but I always gained the weight back. At the weight loss surgery orientation, I heard the story of a man who had lost more than 100 pounds and regained his health and a whole new outlook on life and food. I filled out the paperwork and started on the path. I qualified for consideration by a mere half-percent — enough to get me to the next step.
After 10 months, my surgery day came with a lot of anxiety. I knew there was risk but I also had great faith in my physicians and team. There was certainly some discomfort and a learning curve in getting used to my new digestive system. I had to really make the effort to remember my vitamins and I learned a few lessons along the way about not eating a lot of sugar and chewing my food properly.
Exercising is now something I look forward to and really miss if I go a few days without it. I've worked with a trainer, taken classes, purchased a bicycle and walk a lot more than I ever dreamed I would. All these things help me get my muscles toned and body strong, which will be beneficial as I get older. My knees don't creak as I walk down the stairs and my heart doesn't flutter when I walk around the block.
I love trying on clothes now, and I am amazed every time I go down a size. I once purchased a pair of pants in size 18 petite. I am now solidly in a size 4 and loving all the options I have. People ask me regularly if I would do it again and I always say yes. I also tell people that changing your life is not just about taking things away from your life but also adding — like adding exercise, water and lean protein.
I am so glad I took this path. I would certainly recommend Via Christi Weight Management and Wichita Surgical Specialists to anyone who has struggled with their weight to this extreme. The results have truly made me a healthier, happier and more content person.
