Juanita Fern Aikman was born Dec. 27, 1923 in Midway, MO. (often referred to as Morgan Camp). She is the second oldest in her family.
Fern would always refer to her father as a "strong, handsome man." Her family moved to West Mineral when Fern was six years old. She attended school there. Fern's oldest brother played football at Pittsburg State University. Donald was the brother who operated Big Brutus and her younger brother, Alva, retired as president of Santa Fe mining in Albuquerque, NM.
She married William Aikman on Dec. 12, 1945. They were married for 42 glorious years. They moved to Pittsburg where they raised both their children, Jacque Lynn, who now resides in Topeka, and Bill Don, who lives in Lake Travis, TX. Both children graduated from Pittsburg High and then furthered their education by attending college. Fern has two grandsons.
She worked at Heartland Realtors as a real estate agent and also at Old National Bank. Her hobbies include playing the piano, bowling (in the past) and in the 1960's won a championship in bowling.
She moved to Via Christi Village in October of 2007. She likes living here because she enjoys meeting the people. It's a place to socialize and just relax.
"It is a way of life with no responsibilities," she smiles.
