Wichita Fusion Nail, a Device for Fusion of the Knee

Despite the generally outstanding overall clinical performance of artificial knees, a small percentage of these implants experience failure or persistent infection. In rare cases, repeated failures make salvage of the joint impossible. For these patients, the optimal alternative would be surgical fusion of the knee. Regrettably, up to 50 percent of knee fusions have failed to unite in the past, leaving the patient with a wholly dysfunctional limb. Under the leadership of David A. McQueen, MD, ORI Medical Director, a new intramedullary compression device has been designed and developed by the engineers at the institute.

The new device, called the Wichita Fusion Nail, consists of a three-component intramedullary rod that stabilizes the knee against all modes of motion during healing. It is designed to provide compression across the fusion during walking as well as at the time of surgery. Implantation is relatively simple, typically taking less than one hour. The device is manufactured by the Stryker company of Mahwah, NJ and is distributed worldwide. The clinical success rate is nearly 100 percent and has been documented in five publications since 2003.
