Surgery is an integral part of cancer care, involving diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, restoration, and management and control of symptoms. Our Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg team of highly skilled and compassionate surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and other professionals perform both inpatient and outpatient procedures daily. Education for patients, families and healthcare providers is given with special emphasis on patient rehabilitation.
Stereotactic Breast Biopsy
Stereotactic Breast Biopsy is a less invasive, non-surgical outpatient procedure which can determine if an abnormality is cancerous. Until recently, all breast biopsies were surgical procedures which required a trip to the operating room. Now, computerized imaging equipment allows radiologists and surgeons to perform the breast biopsy quickly and painlessly. Stereotactic breast biopsy is as accurate as traditional surgical biopsy, but it decreases the amount of tissue removed for diagnosis and minimizes any scarring to the breast. This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis in our Women's Imaging Center.
