The Via Christi Regional Burn Center is the only dedicated burn care facility within 180 miles of Wichita. Opened in 1982, it has 12 beds to best meet the ever-changing needs of patients and provide the best environment for recovery from serious injury. In 2007, following a rigorous review, the Burn Center was awarded a three-year verification by the American College of Surgeons as an adult and pediatric burn center, the only one in Kansas so verified.

The Burn Center also treats trauma patients and those with complicated wounds or special conditions that result in the loss of skin. All patient rooms are private and feature state-of-the-art equipment. Rooms designated for the most critically injured patients are equipped with in-room hydrotherapy equipment.

A separate Emergency Outpatient Clinic is just inside the main entrance of the Burn Center, for patients with minor injuries or those requiring treatment after an inpatient stay.

A specialized Burn Team works with patients and families to coordinate all aspects of care: physicians who are experts in burns and trauma, nurses and patient care technicians, social workers, case managers, chaplains, dietitians, and therapists. All Burn Center nurses are certified Advance Cardiac Life  Support within one year of starting in the Burn Center. Relief Charge Personnel hold certifications in Trauma Nurse Core Course and Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course or Pediatric Advance Life Support within one year of working in the Burn Center.

Burn physicians are available 24 hours a day to answer questions or accept referrals. Call the Burn Center at 316-268-5388 or call the Via Christi operator at 316-268-7000 and ask for the Burn Center.

The Burn Team partners with Safe Kids Wichita Area and the Wichita and Sedgwick County fire departments in actively promoting communitywide burn prevention and treatment education, state and national legislative initiatives and other activities to decrease the incidence of burns, and burn survivor support activities. Call 316-946-5045 for more information.
