|Patients and families living in and around west Wichita soon won’t have to go far to access inpatient rehabilitation services from Via Christi Health.
By Aug. 1, they’ll be able to receive that care at Via Christi Hospital on St. Teresa — rapidly becoming the hospital of choice for its neighboring residents and communities.
“Since the opening of our hospital 20 months ago, we’ve been hearing from physicians, patients and their families requesting that we expand our services to include close-to-home rehabilitation care,” said Kevin Strecker, president of the city’s only full-service hospital in west Wichita.
In response to that call, space originally intended for a medical/surgical unit on 2E will be dedicated for use as an 18-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit primarily benefiting patients who have had a stroke, joint replacement or spinal cord injury. Most of the project's cost for equipment and minor remodeling was provided through the more than $300,000 in donations made to the Via Christi Foundation for use at hospital on St. Teresa.
“Patient satisfaction at our hospital has been consistently outstanding,” said Strecker. “So it’s understandable that patients and their families would want to continue their care with Via Christi, offering them exceptional continuity of care as they move from acute care to rehab and then on to independent or assisted living.”
The new inpatient rehab unit also will mean the creation of 43 new positions, including physical, occupational and speech therapy, nursing and nursing support and other entry-level positions.
While the new unit will operate under the same provider number as Via Christi Hospital on St. Teresa, executive responsibility for the unit’s administration, clinical quality, patient safety and satisfaction will be shared by Strecker; Cindy LaFleur, president of Post-acute Services, Wichita; and Linda Goodwin, chief nursing officer for Via Christi’s five Wichita hospitals.
“It’s the same leadership model we employ at our hospitals on St. Francis and East Harry,” said LaFleur.
For patients living in and around east Wichita or with high-acuity brain injuries, care is available at Via Christi Rehabilitation Hospital, 1151 N. Rock Road, which offers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services to patients from toddlers to adults from throughout the Midwest.
“Our goal is to provide exceptional care in a patient- and family-centered environment,” said LaFleur. “Offering rehabilitation care on both sides of town furthers our ability to do so.”
