Via Christi Hospitals in Wichita

The Blood and Marrow Transplant Center of Kansas is FACT reaccredited
The Blood and Marrow Transplant Center of Kansas of the Via Christi Cancer Institute has received renewal of its three-year accreditation — through Nov. 26, 2014 — by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy, or FACT.

The Transplant Center is a cooperative effort between Via Christi, The American Red Cross and The Cancer Center of Kansas. The accreditation applies to all services and facilities inspected by FACT for adult autologous hematopoietic progenitor cell transplantation. The transplant process involves harvesting the patient’s own stem cells (which are the cells that become red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets), storing the cells, and then administering very high dose chemotherapy to the patient to eradicate as many cancer cells as possible. The stored stem cells are then given back to the patient in the form of a transfusion to help the patient’s bone marrow recover after the high dose chemotherapy. The Clinical Program, Collection Program and Processing Program were inspected.

Accreditation by FACT ensures that a program is of the highest quality by meeting comprehensive standards throughout the transplant process. The center has been FACT accredited since 1999.
