Via Christi's walk-in Breastfeeding Clinic
We're here to help you and your baby get off to the best start — with breastfeeding. We offer classes before your baby is born, a visit from a certified lactation consultant during your stay and follow-up support after the two of you go home.
For breastfeeding classes call 316-689-5700 or enroll online. Our lactation consultants can be reached at 316-689-5426.
The Via Christi Breastfeeding Clinic opened in June 2008 to help with a variety of challenges for breastfeeding mothers, including breast engorgement, low milk supply, preparing to return to work, babies who have difficulty latching on, are jaundiced or have weight gain issues.
New moms will find advice and encouragement at the Via Christi Breastfeeding Clinic at the NewLife Center in Via Christi Hospital on Harry 4th floor, Wichita. This walk-in clinic is open 10 am - 2 pm Monday through Friday and is staffed by lactation consultants and registered nurses who help mothers with questions and concerns about breast feeding, make recommendations on breast pumps and where to get them, and assess infants to ensure they are gaining weight appropriately. Medical issues are referred for physician follow-up.
The service is provided at no cost to women who've delivered at the Via Christi NewLife Center at Via Christi Hospital on Harry. A one-time $50 fee will be collected from women who delivered elsewhere.
"We've had up to 14 mothers during a four-hour period," said Amy Ellington, the board-certified lactation consultant who manages Via Christi's Lactation department.
"We invest a lot of time and effort in helping breastfeeding mothers in the hospital," said Ellington, noting that at Via Christi all breastfeeding mothers receive at least one daily lactation consultation during their hospital stay. "We educate every day, watch the baby latch every day and will assist at every feeding if we need to.
"But once the milk comes in, which is usually after mother and baby have left the hospital, a whole new set of problems can arise," she said. "That's where the clinic has been a godsend."
