Gerard House: Caring for pregnant women in need
Gerard House is a home for pregnant teenagers and young women, located in northwest Wichita. It provides a safe, caring, supportive home for women choosing to give birth as they decide whether to keep and raise their child or place it with an adoptive couple.
This special ministry, named for Gerard Majella, the patron saint of mothers, is sponsored by the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother and the Congregation of St. Joseph and their local mission, Via Christi Hospital. It offers on-site Lamaze and parenting classes, tutoring for those still in school, and instruction in basic life skills such as meal preparation and housekeeping, to help the women transition to life outside the home.
Gerard House also provides psychological, spiritual and adoption counseling to its residents.
Although Gerard House adheres to Catholic principles and philosophy, the home welcomes all pregnant women in need, regardless of religious beliefs, race or nationality.
