Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis, 929 N. St. Francis
Days of the Week
Via Christi Hospitals in Wichita will offer Stepping On, a uniquely effective fall prevention course for older adults.
The weekly Thursday classes, which run from March 27 - May 8, will be held at Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis.
Developed in Australia by occupational therapist Lindy Clemson, PhD, Stepping On is considered to be one of the most effective fall-prevention programs available worldwide, giving adults 65 and older the confidence to undertake their everyday activities safely. According to an evaluation of the program published in the September 2004 Journal of American Geriatrics Society, participants experienced more than 30 percent fewer falls after completing the course.
The course includes seven two-hour sessions, a home visit or phone call by the instructor, and a follow-up session after three months. Course content covers a range of issues, including falls and risk, strength and balance exercises, home hazards, safe footwear, vision and falls, safety in public places, community mobility, coping after a fall, and understanding how to initiate a medication review.
Instructors will be Daniel Engel, Via Christi Home Health physical therapist, and Carolyn Cowart, a physical therapist and education coordinator for Via Christi Hospitals in Wichita. They are among only four in Wichita and 18 statewide trained to teach the course.
