Via Christi to celebrate National Donate Life Month with special event

April is National Donate Life Month, a time to honor America’s organ, eye and tissue donors and to call attention to the need for more people to document their donation decision.

To celebrate organ, tissue and eye donors, a flag-raising ceremony and reading of the first names of 2012 Via Christi organ donors will be held 8:30 a.m. Monday, April 1, at the front entrance of Via Christi Hospital, 929 N. St. Francis in Wichita.

Via Christi is one of the nation’s leading hospitals for organ donation and recently was honored as an eight-time Medal of Honor recipient by the Health Resources and Services Administration for achieving an organ donation rate of 75 percent. The medal will be displayed in the entrance of the hospital on St. Francis. The display also will feature white roses, courtesy of Midwest Transplant Network and Kansas Eye Bank, to honor 2012 organ, eye and tissue donors. A similar display will be in the Down Under Café at Via Christi Hospital on Harry.
