Via Christi Health president and CEO accepts position with Coventry Health Care

WICHITA, Kan. (Nov. 4, 2010) – Via Christi Health announced today that Kevin Conlin, president and CEO, will leave Via Christi at the end of the year to become executive vice president for Coventry Health Care, Inc., in Bethesda, Md.

“Kevin is well-recognized and respected in health care on a national level”, says David Strohm, chairman of the board. “While his departure is unfortunate, Via Christi has a strong leadership team in place and the Board of Trustees is confident in the strategic direction of the health system. Our commitment to quality, innovation, and growth will advance unabated. We will search for a candidate who will further Via Christi’s strategic objectives.”

Strohm says the Board of Trustees will work with Conlin during his remaining time with Via Christi to develop a transition plan for leadership of the health system.

Conlin joined Via Christi Health in March, 2004.

“It has been my privilege to work alongside our sponsors, boards, physicians and employees to serve our region,” he says. “We have an outstanding leadership team in place and I am confident that they will continue to move Via Christi Health in a positive direction.”

Via Christi’s accomplishments are many during Conlin’s tenure:

  • Conlin brought Via Christi Health’s ministries together as an integrated health system and set the stage to implement such new technologies and transformational care programs as eCare-ICU, ePharmacy, CiBOR and Via Christi InMyHome.
  • Via Christi Health launched such technologies as the CyberKnife® and da Vinci™ Robotic Surgery Systems were added during Conlin’s tenure.
  • Via Christi Hospital on St. Teresa recently opened as west Wichita’s first hospital and the first new hospital in the history of Via Christi Health.
  • In 2006 and 2007, Thomson Reuters named Via Christi Regional Medical Center (now Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis and Via Christi Hospital on Harry) one of the Top 100 Performance Improvement Leaders.
  • In 2009 and 2010, Thomson Reuters named Via Christi Health to the top quintile among health systems for performance in its Top 100 Hospitals: Health Systems benchmarking study.
  • Via Christi Hospitals, Wichita has received HealthGrades’ Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award™ for five straight years with multiple citations: cardiac, stroke, gastrointestinal, pulmonary and critical care. Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan has received HealthGrades’ Joint Replacement Excellence Award™ for four straight years. Mercy (is managed by Via Christi Health and is 50 percent owned) is a winner of HealthGrades’ Outstanding Patient Experience Award.
  • in positioned Via Christi Health for the future by arranging the sale of St. Rose Hospital to the local community in Hayward, Calif., and Via Christi Oklahoma Regional Medical Center to Community Health Systems. The sales took place in 2005 and 2006, respectively. In 2010, Via Christi sold its insurance company, Preferred Health Systems, to Coventry Health Care. Via Christi purchased a minority interest in Kansas Heart Hospital in 2007.

During his tenure at Via Christi Health, Conlin has served on the boards of the Wichita Business Coalition on Health Care, Kansas Hospital Association, Avera Health, Catholic CEO HealthCare Connection and Catholic Charities in Wichita. He also served on the American Hospital Association’s Task Force on Payment Reform.
