Striving to provide the best care possible
Via Christi’s number one goal is to continuously improve the quality and safety of the care we provide to our patients and senior village residents. We are committed to delivering the highest-quality, safest care to every patient, every time, in the clinical setting most appropriate to their needs.
Under the leadership of doctors, nurses and other clinicians, Via Christi is taking a disciplined, rigorous approach to improving patient safety as we become a high-reliability organization. The physician-led Clinical Practice Committee governs all decisions about patient care throughout Via Christi. Our physician and administrative leaders, along with our nurses and other clinicians, hold daily safety huddles seven days a week on every patient-care unit throughout Via Christi to review and address any safety issues identified during the past 24 hours, and to plan for the next 24 hours.
To achieve continuous quality improvement, Via Christi also has:
- Enhanced our physician-led Center for Clinical Excellence with the expertise of industrial engineers and quality improvement black belts from the aviation industry in Wichita.
- Provided training in the principles of high-reliability science and Six Sigma quality-improvement to our 10,000 employees.
- Established Performance Improvement Teams to help us make measurable quality advances in such areas as improving surgical care, reducing hospital-acquired infections and reducing preventable hospital readmissions.
- Implemented systematic approaches to improving hand hygiene practices to prevent the spread of hospital-acquired infections, preventing patient falls and improving the accuracy of laboratory specimen-labeling.
Via Christi’s leadership in patient safety and high reliability also is benefitting all of Wichita and Kansas.
Via Christi, the Medical Society of Sedgwick County, Wesley Medical Center, Kansas Heart Hospital, Kansas Surgery and Recovery Center and other health care organizations have worked together to create a standard safety time-out protocol before surgeries and other invasive procedures.
Our collective goal is to make Wichita the safest place in the nation to undergo surgery and other procedures. Studies have shown that a standard and effective surgical time-out can reduce mortality by 44 percent by preventing errors such as wrong-site surgeries and operating room fires.
Via Christi’s focus on our quality improvement is continuous and directed toward achieving a goal of zero serious safety events by the year 2020.
