Since moving to Via Christi Village in Pittsburg on July 15, 2008, Bettye Haggard has enchanted others with her smiling face and pleasant demeanor. She enjoys visiting with other people and that message resonates with those she meets.
A native of Kinta, Okla., Bettye came to Pittsburg to attend Kansas State Teachers' College (now PSU).
She married her college beau, J. D. Haggard, on Dec. 22, 1942. He taught math at PSU and was the dean of graduate studies, while Bettye stayed home to raise their son, Jim, and daughter, Barbara. The family has now grown to include four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
At one point in their 57 years together, J. D. and Bettye lived in India, where he helped teach math to teachers. Bettye also kept busy with counted cross-stitch, gardening, walking, cooking and volunteering for Red Cross and VIE, an association serving unwed mothers.
At home at the Village, Bettye enjoys visiting with her fellow residents and taking walks after the evening meal. She says the people she has met are very good and very attentive.
