Alexia Ebert, a native of Blaine, Kansas, turned 100 on June 21, 2011. Her birthday celebration was held Sunday, June 26. Four generations had the opportunity to celebrate prior to her party.
She tells stories about when she was a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse near Blaine. Alexia taught school for two years before she married in 1934. She taught seven grades and her family still has the grading book that she used. Alexia met her husband, Al Ebert, at a local dance and Al wrote a letter to Alexia to ask her on a date. When Alexia said yes, Al drove 25 miles to take her on a date. They would typically go to the movie theatre in Frankfort and then out for a strawberry soda afterwards.
At that time, it was not acceptable to continue teaching while married, so she resigned. She and her husband farmed and had six children: James, Patrick, Sharon, Thomas, Alexis, and Hugh. Alexia dressed chickens, gardened, canned, and kept busy with her family. Alexia lived on her farm for a total of 71 years off of Flush Road, the last 21 by herself after Al passed away in 1984. Her family has now grown to include 15 living grandchildren, and 34 great-grandchildren.
Happy Birthday, Alexia!
