Diabetes Education

Offered through Mercy Regional's Diabetes Center, the following diabetes education opportunities are available:

Diabetes Education Class
Gestational Diabetes Class
Living Well Class


Diabetes Education Class

Learn how to manage your diabetes by adopting a smart, healthy lifestyle. The Diabetes Education course consists of four class sessions and covers topics such as:

  • Healthy eating
  • Staying active
  • Monitoring health status
  • Medications
  • Problem-solving
  • Healthy coping
  • Reducing risks
  • Illness management
  • Glucose monitor included

New classes start every other week - both daytime and evening classes are available. Pre-registration is mandatory for all classes. A referral from a healthcare provider is required.

If you need further assistance in managing your diabetes and insulin adjustments, Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) may be helpful. Our Diabetes Educators can assist with CGM, if needed or requested.

Gestational Diabetes Education

Once you are referred to the Diabetes Center for management of gestational diabetes by a healthcare provider, we will call you to set up an initial appointment and individual follow-up appointments as needed. (Glucose Monitor included.) 

Topics include:

  • Basic physiology of gestational diabetes
  • Nutrition
  • Physical activity
  • Blood glucose monitoring
  • Labor and delivery
  • Type 2 diabetes prevention after delivery

If you need further assistance in managing your diabetes and insulin adjustments, Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) may be helpful. Our Diabetes Educators can assist with CGM, if needed or requested.

Living Well Class

Living Well is a prevention strategies program that aims to help at-risk individuals delay or prevent Type 2 diabetes, as well as heart disease. Taught by certified diabetes educator nurses and dietitians, the program consists of two classes.

Topics include:

  • Knowing your numbers
  • Insulin resistance/metabolic syndrome
  • Hypertension
  • Elevated cholesterol/triglycerides
  • Smoking Cessation
  • Nutrition
  • Weight loss
  • Physical activity
  • Setting and achieving personal health goals

Class participants are encouraged to bring one family member with them.

Body mass index (BMI) will be recorded, which requires a weigh-in.

Class times: 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. (offered the 3rd and 4th Tuesday of the month)

Program cost  $90 (balance due at first class)
